ウェッジウッド「ナンタケット」にまつわる話

ウェッジウッドには「ナンタケット」という、白地に網目模様を施したシリーズがありますね。

この「ナンタケット」は、実は日本と深い縁があるのを知っていましたか？

まず名称のナンタケットとは、アメリカ・マサチューセッツ州にある島、ナンタケット島のことであります。

そしてこのナンタケット島には「ナンタケット・バスケット」という、籐カゴの名産品があり、ウェッジウッドの「ナンタケット」のあの網目模様は、このナンタケット・バスケットがモチーフになっています。

それともう一つ、ナンタケット島はかつて、捕鯨産業が盛んで「クジラの島」と呼ばれた時代もありました。

19世紀当時のアメリカはナンタケット島を中心に、大西洋での捕鯨活動に力を入れており、その鯨から取れる鯨油を世界中に輸出、アメリカに大きな富をもたらしていました。

石油が発見されるまで、鯨油は燃料やロウソクの原料、機械油、洗剤、食用（マーガリン原料）として、アメリカのみならずヨーロッパ各地でも大変重宝されていたんですが、そのために大西洋の鯨が激減する事態に陥ります。

そこでアメリカは太平洋にまで足を伸ばし、さらに鯨をザクザク取ってやろうと考えたわけですが、その太平洋域には、鎖国真っ最中の日本が鎮座しておりました。

鯨を取りにきたアメリカの船団を、当時の日本は容赦なく砲弾で攻撃します。

本当は日本を物資や燃料補給の中継地として、太平洋での捕鯨活動の拠点に利用しようと考えていたアメリカでしたが、思惑は大外れ。

これに業を煮やしたアメリカの捕鯨団体が、日本に開国を迫るようアメリカ議会に要請。

当時の捕鯨団体は、アメリカにとっても重要な稼ぎ頭だったので、議会もこの要請を無視できず、ペリーを日本に向かわせることとなります。

そして日本にとっては、この黒船来航が鎖国を解き、明治維新へ向かうきっかけとなりました。

ちなみにナンタケット・バスケットは、アメリカの捕鯨船の乗組員が、長い航海中に手なぐさみで編み始めたのがその始まりと言われています。

ですから英国のウェッジウッドから見れば「ナンタケット」とは、美しい籐カゴの名前にすぎないのでしょうが、日本人にとってみれば「ナンタケット」とは鯨漁を引き金として、黒船来航・開国・維新と、籐カゴよりもずっと深い意味を感じさせる名前だったんですね。
